A Godot based prototype driving sim. Supports controller and keyboard. Currently still very hacky and contentless, but there's a little track to lap. The driving aspect of this is something I'm reasonably happy with by now

  • V0.0.5 - Removed Continous Collision Detection for more stable wall collisions
  • V0.0.6
    • Added a system to back off steering angle under deceleration, hopefully making the car more stable
    • Reduced total brake torque from 3000Nm to 2700Nm
    • Adjusted the tyre in combined friction scenarios

    • Changed the system to adjust steering angle with decel to one that piles on more lock if while decelerating and steering to improve stability
    • Adjusted a few car parameters to take advantage of the new stability
    • Further adjusted the tyre in combined friction scenarios

    • Overhauled the steering system by burying my head in Race Car Vehicle Dynamics.
    • Retuned the tyre model to not halve its grip the moment the car got a slide on.
    • Moved brake bias fowards a touch.

    • HUD is now anchored correctly so going into full screen doesn't move it to strange places.
    • Redid tyre load sensitivity, car has less grip than previously.

    • Added a clutch! Now you can rev in neutral and maybe get some slip in other gears if you really screw up.
    • Brake application is now non-linear, uses an exponent of 2.5.
    • Brake torque reduced to 2500Nm.

    • Load sensitivity is changed to a different formula.

    • Fixed a major bug with the dampers which meant they were applying upwards force from the car accelerating, and a downward force from deceleration.
      • Therefore car is much softer than previously possible.
    • Anti-roll bars have been added to reduce body roll.
    • Tyre in combined grip is now much more gradual than previously.
    • Updated to Godot 4.4, which seems to have fixed some collision inconsistencies between the editor and the release. Less (hopefully no) random spinning to a stop crashes from grazing walls now.

  • V0.0.13
    • Totally redid the tyre model. Sim uses a new Bezier curve system for the lateral grip as of this update.
    • Car now uses the lateral slip velocity, as opposed to the slip angle, to find lateral force.
    • New steering filter which should hopefully make the car much less twitchy.
    • Fixed a bug with the differential under braking that generated more braking torque than existed.
    • Brake now has a smoothing function as you increase brake percentage to make it easier to find peak slip.
    • Animated-ish water!
    • Brake bias moved back to 65% front
